Alone, Yet Not Alone
Alone he wrestled with an angel, and alone he almost prevailed, yet not quite. He halted upon his thigh, which bore testimony for the rest of his life of the struggle he had there; alone. - Jacob, later known as Israel.
Alone he took the journey into the wilderness. Angels came to strengthen him along the way; they said the journey was too great for him. There alone he met God on the mountain. Alone he saw the mighty power of God rend the natural elements. And then, alone, God spoke to him in a quiet voice that erased fear and told him what he should do. -Elijah, the prophet.
Alone he prayed in the garden, while nearby his friends slept. Alone he prayed that the cup of suffering he was destined to bear would be taken away. Alone, the sweat came as drops of blood on his brow, so great was the agony of his soul. Alone, yet not alone; the angels came and ministered to him.
Alone, defenseless, he stood in the judgment hall as false accusations were hurled at him. Alone he heard the verdict. Alone he felt the whip as it cut his back. Alone he attempted to carry his cross, only to find that alone he could not do it. He had become too weak, his physical strength failed. Though flanked with a prisoner on either side, he died alone to bear the sins of the whole world. - Jesus, the Son of God.
Alone he fled from this scene, knowing he had denied his Lord, just as the Lord had said. Alone he wept bitterly. Yet not alone, the Spirit sent him to preach the gospel to the Gentiles. - Peter, the apostle of Jesus Christ.
Alone, sling in hand, he ran to meet the giant. Yet not alone, because the God of Israel was with him. - David, the shepherd boy.
Alone I face the greatest decisions of my life. Alone, I bear responsibility for the sins I have committed. Alone I come before his mercy seat, confessing my sins, surrendering all my hopes, dreams; past, present, and future. Alone my Lord draws near and fills my heart with peace and acceptance. Alone, yet not alone, I stand, saved by grace alone. - Me, a sinner saved by grace.
Alone we all will stand before the great "I AM." Alone we will answer for the deeds we have done, the decisions we have or have not made. Alone we will hear the verdict of our lives. We will either face eternal judgment alone or be welcomed in, where we will be alone no longer. - Everyone who has ever lived.
We may be alone, feel alone, but we are never alone. He is ever present and ever near. Our Savior, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Matthew 28:20b KJV And, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
